Response to Black Friday

Every year more and more consumers are being involved to the special and

long-expected event for all shopaholics.

Black Friday is one of the brightest and unforgettable Fridays of the year, it is a day of huge discounts and sales. The famous Black Friday starts every year on the first Friday after American Thanksgiving Day, usually this is the last week of November. The tradition of this rampant shopping originated in America as early as the 19th century, when the largest retail chains began to arrange grandiose Christmas sales, stimulating buyers to buy incredible amounts of discounts, bonuses, special gifts, etc.

This year I was involved in this special day and was really astonished to see crazy people at shops. People were really obsessed with buying a lot of new clothing starting with Friday morning.

In contrast to this messy and massive purchase, sometimes completely unnecessary things, Greenpeace Navarra-Nafarroa organized an event “Make” that took place this weekend in cultural space Geltoki in Pamplona.

Basically it was a creative response to Black Friday with a program full of activities where instead of shopping they proposed to participate in workshops and events in which you could obtain new skills and observe fun ways to make the most of the resources that surround us. The main goal of this event was to educate people about fast fashion and responsible consuming.

Besides, there were organised market, where everyone could buy second hand clothing and accessorizes. Honestly speaking, it is very gratifying that people are thinking about environmental issues, arrange such special events, promote responsible attitude to fashion aspects and care about sustainability at all.
