Zero Waste Shopping: How To

Have you noticed that almost every product in a regular supermarket is packaged? This way we produce a lot of waste and the prices are more expensive as a lot of the money goes to the packaging, especially when we buy products in small amounts. We can change this by changing our way of shopping. This can be less convenient as you don’t go to one store anymore and get all your stuff at the same place. But once you try it you notice that it’s actually a lot of fun, you get fresher products and most importantly you can feel good about yourself as you help protecting the environment.

So how do you do this?

The first step is to buy reusable produce bags, glass jars or containers. Second step is to ban the supermarket out of your life and start shopping at local stores. Fresh products you can get at the greengrocer, butcher, bakery and fish seller. Ask the seller not to pack the product and take it in your own bag. For shelf-life products you can go to so-called bulk food stores of which there are more and more. Here you can find nuts, seeds, grains, rice and more. The concept is easy, you take as much of the product as you want, put it on your own bag or jar and pay for the amount you got. Most things are sold by weight or occasionally products are sold per unit and some liquids will be sold by volume. The price label will always tell you how you will be charged.

The source bulk foods is such a store located in Australia, New Zealand and now also in the UK. See their story in the video below.
